Charlotte Wolters, Core Founder & General Coordinating Chair
(French message will follow)
September for the WLMP is an exciting time as we welcome new and returning participants! We’ve been busy this summer reviewing, revamping and preparing to serve WLMP participants throughout the 2012-2013 academic year.
We have a great new 2012-2013 Strategic Coordinating Committee leadership group. You will be meeting them over the next few weeks. Some who volunteered with us over this summer have moved on to new schools and other provinces. They will be missed!
In 2011, the WLMP embarked on providing women law students at the University Of Ottawa Faculty of Common Law with a new feminist based approach to mentorship. We frame it as advocacy based mentorship.
This innovative program —the first of its kind in Ontario — combining peer-to-peer mentorship, student-lawyer mentorship, and professional development and leadership workshops focuses on fostering a collaborative feminist network from the classroom to the courtroom.
Launched in September 2011 on the English Common Law Section, the WLMP had over 100 participants enrolled.
This September, the WLMP is launching on the French Common Law Section. Based on our past success, we anticipate serving well over 100 women law students within the Faculty of Common Law at the University of Ottawa during the 2012-2013 academic year.
In addition to our peer mentorship and student-lawyer mentorship programs, we will continue to offer professional and leadership development workshops.
September 19th (11:30 – 1:00 PM) FTX 235 – WLMP Orientation – This orientation event explains how the WLMP works and provides information on the WLMP’s two mentorship programs. Student Mentee Forms for the Student Lawyer Mentorship program will be available at this event.
WLMP Proud to Co-Sponsor celebration of Justice L’Heureux-Dubé
On September 8, 2012 the Honourable Claire L’Heureux-Dubé will celebrate her 85th birthday. The University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, the Women’s Legal Mentorship Program, the Shirley Greenberg Chair for Women and the Legal Profession, and the Public Law Group are organizing and co-sponsoring two events in celebration of Justice L’Heureux-Dubé`s birthday and to mark the 10th anniversary of her retirement from the Supreme Court of Canada. The two events are as follows:
- A free public lecture on September 25, 2012 at the University of Ottawa with Justice L’Heureux-Dubé in conversation with Professor Constance Backhouse.
- An evening invitation only reception at the Supreme Court of Canada on September 24, 2012. The evening will feature a toast to Justice L’Heureux-Dubé by Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin. See the September 3rd blog post for WLMP Contest Details.
October 2nd – WLMP Legal Leaders Breakfast – Breakfast is on us!
When: 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m
Where: the University of Ottawa’s Tabaret Hall, room 112 located at 550 Cumberland Street.
This breakfast gives women law students and lawyers a chance to connect. Open to all WLMP participants and legal mentors, this breakfast is a great opportunity to socialize and support each other.
October 11th (11:30 -1:00 PM) – Meet Your Match! – Once you’ve registered as a peer mentee or peer mentor and are matched, it’s time to meet! This event is where students enrolled in WLMP’s Peer Mentor program meet their match.
Demystifying Mooting – This very popular event is geared towards first year law students participating in the first year moots. It will be offered to both French and English Common Law women law students in preparation for the first year moots.
Make sure to keep checking the WLMP Blog for event updates and Facebook: WLMP uOttawa.
We are hoping to offer the following workshops as part of our legal leadership development workshops. We are still completely student run and rely on the kindness of the Ontario legal community and the Faculty of Common Law’s Student Services.
Much will depend on funding and if we are able to locate suitable sponsoring partners for these events. As always we will work hard to make breaking down barriers and building a strong feminist support network a reality:
- Anti-Oppression Training
- Resiliency Training – helping you bounce back from barriers in the workplace and school.
- How to Chair a Board Meeting – the basics of chairing of board meeting.
Make sure to check out the WLMP Blog womenslegalmentorship.wordpress.com for event updates, articles and information. You can also follow us on Twitter: wlmpuottawa or Facebook: WLMP uOttawa.
On behalf of the WLMP, we look forward to seeing you !
